Economist · Lecturer

Economics for understanding power, inequality and public life.

I am a Lecturer in Economics at SOAS University of London. My research combines applied microeconomics, causal inference and text analysis to study political communication, hate crime and racial discrimination.

Profile

I work at the intersection of political economy, labour economics and computational social science.

My research asks how political messages and electoral incentives shape social conflict, and how bias is reflected in markets. I use high-frequency event data, natural language processing and applied econometric methods to turn complex social questions into testable empirical research.

Alongside research, I design and lead quantitative teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. I also contribute to programme development, academic support, widening participation and institutional work on inclusive and responsible uses of AI in education.

Research

Three essays on conflict, social bias and racial discrimination

Research that follows how ideas become outcomes.

01

Political communication · India

Political rhetoric and social conflict

Explores how political communication relates to communal tensions in India, combining computational analysis of political language with applied empirical methods.

Text analysis · Applied microeconometrics

02

Elections · Social conflict

Electoral politics and communal tensions

Studies the relationship between electoral politics and communal tensions in India using applied microeconomic theory and quantitative evidence.

Causal inference · Panel data

03

Racial discrimination · Online markets

Racial disparities in soccer player share prices

Investigates whether skin tone is associated with footballers' prices on an online gambling platform, tracing unequal treatment across the price distribution.

Unconditional quantile regression · Decomposition methods

Teaching

Econometrics, mathematics, R and Python

Current teaching at SOAS

I teach quantitative methods at undergraduate and postgraduate level. My classes combine economic and econometric theory with practical work in R and Python, using real data and policy examples wherever possible.

Undergraduate

Mathematics for Economists

Core mathematical methods and their application to economic problems.

Undergraduate

Econometrics II

Econometric theory and applied analysis for students building on introductory methods.

Postgraduate

Econometrics with R Coding

Regression modelling, diagnostics and applied interpretation using R.

Postgraduate

Advanced Econometrics with R Coding

Advanced causal and econometric methods, with practical implementation and replication in R.

Postgraduate

R Coding Workshops

Practical workshops supporting students to work confidently and reproducibly in R.

Postgraduate · Contributing

Data Analysis with Python

Contributing to teaching on data preparation, analysis and visualisation in Python.

Leadership

Programme development, inclusive education and public engagement

Contributing beyond the classroom.

At SOAS, I combine programme leadership with work on student experience, inclusive attainment, academic support and outreach. My focus is practical: identifying barriers, building useful interventions and helping students see where economics can take them.

Curriculum and teaching

Programme development

Co-developing new MSc Data Science programmes and leading modules in econometrics, R and Python. I also recruit and mentor Graduate Teaching Assistants and have delivered training for new GTAs and Associate Lecturers.

Equity and support

Inclusive student experience

Department lead for Bridging the Gap, lead author of awarding-gap analysis, College representative on the Awarding Gap Task and Finish Group, and co-lead of the academic stream informing SOAS's academic-support redesign.

Pedagogy and AI

Responsible innovation

INERME Associate and co-organiser of a departmental teaching and learning away day focused on AI in assessment and education. My practice uses AI, peer assessment and active learning to support inclusive quantitative teaching.

Access and recruitment

Outreach and engagement

Economics masterclasses, school and sixth-form talks, summer-school teaching and university recruitment activity in the UK and India, including engagement with prospective students and academic partners.

Selected engagement

Farnborough, Leyton, St Charles and Woodhouse sixth-form colleges; Queen's Park Community School; Chestnut Grove Academy; SOAS Year 10 and Year 12 summer schools; UCAS Twickenham; and offer-holder and partnership activity in New Delhi and Mumbai.

Experience

Experience across higher education and analytics.
